Kodomo No Hi

Today is a national holiday in Japan – Kodomo no hi or Children’s Day. One symbol of the day is the Koinobori, the flying carp seen everywhere. The black carp at the top represents the father, the red carp next is the mother, and the ones below are the children in the family.

These koinobori photos were taken on our trip to Asahikawa and Furano this past weekend. I’ll be writing more about our three day trip soon.

It is unusual to see large scale koinobori like these in the metropolis. They are very impressive.
