Shuri Ryusen Class

When I was in Naha, I took three Okinawan craft classes.  The first was a coral painting class at Shuri Ryusen.  A staff member explained how to do it and I was on my own to do whatever I wanted.

There were beautiful displays of items for sale in the shop.

After I was finished, I was offered coffee and a sweet in the lobby area.  I'm not sure what the sweet was.  It was a fried dough ball that was very chewy. Like many foods in Japan for me, delicious but unknown.

When I got home I had to iron the shirt to set the color.  Here is my finished project, which was a gift.

That looks like a very interesting class Pamela, you put the paint on the coral and then print onto fabric, is that right? I have just had another look, did you tie the fabric over the coral and paint on top? Which ever way it looks amazing.

That's awesome! There seem to be all kind of interesting techniques in Japan, it makes you wonder what else might be out there in the world!
