Sometimes We Just Have To Get Away

Even tortoises need to get away sometimes.  Abuh, a 35 year old female tortoise, weighing 55 kilograms and measuring a meter in length, escaped from the Shibukawa Animal Park in Okayama Prefecture in early August.  She was on the loose for two weeks before being found just 140 meters from the zoo.

Zoo keepers offered a 500,000 yen reward for her safe return after they were unable to find her. She was found in nearby shrubbery.  This was the second time in less than a month that she had disappeared.  I guess we all just need to get away at times.

Hard to imagine such a large creature hiding so well for a couple of weeks. Sounds like she had just had enough of zoo life for a while!

I can see how she was hard to spot, with her coloring she's probably close to invisible in the shrubs. Plus she doesn't make any noise if she's not moving, lol

Tortoises are prone to escape. I have seen them climbing on top of each other just to get over a fence!
