Recently I read that there is a potato chip shortage in Japan because of the typhoons that hit Hokkaido last summer, wiping out a lot of potatoes. Several potato chip companies including Calbee and Kikeya have started limiting their varieties or discontinuing the large size bags. Calbee has permanently stopped making 18 varieties including French Salad Flavor and Plum Flavor. Kiokeya had permanently discontinued Garlic Flavor and eight other flavors. Calabee has had to import potatoes from the United States due to the shortage in Japan, but claims the majority of American potatoes are of insufficient quality.
(Last year I bought a can of ChipStar Strawberry Chips.) The article I read did not mention Pringles potato chips, which has many varieties, often available on a limited time basis. I remember Pringles in the US in plain, BBQ, and sour cream and onion flavors, but that's all.
The 2017 Pringles line up includes these flavors
Wasabi Nori
This year kicked off with the same Japan-exclusive flavour that was available back in February 2016, only this time with extra wasabi.
Jalapeno & Onion
Released on 14 March, this is the latest addition to the staple Pringles lineup, currently available in stores.
Music – Tasty Salt
The Music range returned for 2017 with another campaign offering free speaker attachments to customers who purchased 19 Pringles.
Music – Sour Cream & Onion
Music – Jalapeno & Onion
Mayo Cheese
Another variety currently in stores for a limited time, this one combines the creamy flavours of cheese and mayonnaise.
I don't eat crips, but I didn't think Pringles are actually made from potatoes; perhaps I am wrong :-)

Hi Pamela, wow thats a lot of varieties,i dont really eat chips but i did years ago and loved chicken and bbq flavours,i cant get ove the how many flavours there are in Japan.
ReplyDeleteYEs, we cab also buy Pringles potato chips here and there are some varieties but I can't say how many because I don't eat purchased potato chips, I make them myself.
ReplyDeleteThe colors and packaging are attractive.
ReplyDeleteWhen I want potato chips I go for Kettle Brand Chips, produced in
Oregon made with potatoes grown in the west U.S.
It is Friday, I think I'll get some to celebrate, maybe BBQ.
Aren't Pringles made from potato powder that has been pressed into thin rounds? If so it is a good way to make use of damaged potato - the spoiled part can be cut off and the left over made into mashed potato powder or Pringles.
ReplyDeleteIt's like Kit-Kat, so many flavors to choose from!
Wow interesting kinds of flavours, we do have Pringles here, I don't eat them either but the kids used to, they liked BBQ or chicken, I liked plain.
ReplyDeleteFunny how we all have our favorite chips..if we do eat chips. I shop at our local Walmart that sells an off brand called Magic. An 11 ox bag is about $1 and I love their BBQ chips. I don't eat any other chip. Pringles has LOTS of varieties now and have some flavors of Tortilla chips as well. Lots of flavors come and go and they try the market to see how well they sell. The big deal here is for brands like Lays to have contests for people to vote on what they would like to see them create next. Bacon flavor is bonkers here now. Venders are even making bacon flavored ice cream...I have no desire to bother to try. I like my bacon with lettuce, tomatoe and mayo!

I don´t eat crisps but a lot of Pringles are sold here.
ReplyDeleteI love Potato Chips, but mostly 'regular' flavours - peppers, salted, barbecue, stuff like that. We do have one company that does more special flavours sometimes - they had a really good one with African spices, but also strange stuff like curry wurst or sauerkraut I think.
