New Department At University Of Tokyo To Open in 2027
Beginning in September 2027, University of Tokyo will open its first new undergraduate department in about 70 years. In order to empower students to take on global challenges, all classes will be taught in English. The new department, named “UTokyo College of Design”, will be a five year combined bachelor’s and master’s degree program.
Half of the 100 student capacity will be for international enrollees, which means only 50 seats for Japanese students. The Japanese school year normally begins in April, but this program will begin in the fall to follow the school year in the US and Europe. All first year students will live in a university dormitory in order to foster cross-cultural exchange by daily interaction.
The university’s president, Teruo Fujii, is quoted as saying “We will create a new place of learning where students can realize their respective visions by fully utilizing the potential of the University of Tokyo.
Hello Pamela: I feel that the Japanese should have preferential treatment first since it is in their country, only 50 students from Japan, is not fair in my eyes.
It's a step in the right direction. I hope they will soon be able to accept more Japanese students.
