Toilet Reading

This sign is in the women’s toilet at the modern art museum.  Most public toilets in Japan feature a toilet flushing sound machine, like the one pictured, so no one can hear what you are doing in the toilet stall.  I'm not sure why you wouldn't want anyone to hear you reading a book while hiding out in the toilet.

  1. Well, if you are sitting fully dressed on the lid of the loo, reading a book, and there is a long queue outside, then you don't want anyone to find out, do you?
There are often other signs in a public loo, prohibiting eating and drinking!... and younger people have also been told to refrain from staying in the stalls for a long time while using the electric socket to recharge their mobile phones...
One thing that has changed in recent years is the amount of graffiti that used to decorate the walls; now you have these notices instead!
