Mikan - The Perfect Fruit

I've found an open air fruit stand selling bags of mikan for only 300 yen!  I've been buying them for several weeks and eating them every day.  They are easy to peel and have no seeds.  I think they are the perfect fruit.

  1. These are so delicious, aren't they ? It's the perfect season for them too, here in Belgium. They're called "mandarines", and the variety without seeds are "clémentines". We use to celebrate St Nicolas on 6th December. It's the children's St patron, and on that day the kids get présents, sweets and... mandarines (IF they've been good, of course!) :) - We also celebrate Christmas and Santa Claus, but the main gifts are for the elderly, and of course an endless meal with the whole family around the table, near the Christmas tree...
Each time I smell a mandarine perfume, it immediately brings me back to my childhood. We also used to put the peels on the heating stove, and the smell was divine (I'm still doing it)...

  4. You have also learned to peel the fruit in one go. Shizuoka is famous for mikan and you get them fresher than we do in Tokyo of course. Enjoy the season!

  6. They go like hotcakes at my house. I always include them in small gift baskets that we give for Christmas. I keep a basket or three for unexpected Christmas visitors as well.
