Going to the Movies

After I broke my arm in Okinawa, I didn't feel like doing much, but still had another day.  I had never been to the movie theater in Japan, but decided it was a good thing to do that day.  The reason I hadn't gone before wasn't because of the language - many movies are in English, with Japanese subtitles.  The reason is the cost!  I'm rather frugal, some would say cheap.  The cost to see the afternoon show was 1800 yen. With my arm hurting, and not wanting to stay in the hotel, I paid to see "Best Seller", mainly because it was the next available English movie.   It is a 2016 movie known as "Genius" in the English market.  I hadn't heard of it before but it was pretty good.  Have you seen it?

I don't know about other theaters, but this one had no concession stand, no popcorn or boxes of Good n Plenty.  There was a drink machine. The theater was clean, but a little old.  There were only a few people in the audience.    One kind of strange thing (to me) is that Japanese people stay seated until all of the credits at the end of the film have finished.

If you break your arm on vacation, I recommend going to the movies!

  1. I haven't heard of that movie Pamela, good there was a distraction for you. Is that a cultural thing that no food was on offer at the movie theatre?

  2. Oh, yes, cinema tickets are dear in Japan! I think many people stay till the very end of the film because they are drowsy! In the old times, one ticket could be used all day. One of my students used films to study English. She bought a ticket, sat to see the first show while reading the subtitles, the second show she saw while trying not to read, and the third she closed her eyes and listened only.

  4. Hi Pamela. I had not heard of this film. We always stay to the end of the credits - the music can be good and occasionally you get a bonus clip at the end! xx

  5. I like to go to the movie theater. We have one in a town near here that costs less than $5 a seat. The earlier you go, the less it costs. However, Terry and I definitely have different preferences in the movies we see so we seldom go to the theater. I had never heard of Genius which is weird because there are plenty of stars in it. I wonder if it was even released in the USA. Often movies are released over seas first. I don't know why.

Hope you are healing and feeling well.
    xx, Carol
