Mt. Fuji Climbing Season

Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan, 3776 meters (12,388 feet) tall.  It is considered an active volcano, having last erupted in 1707. In 2013, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has become even more popular as a destination.  Twenty-five cultural sites are included in this Mt. Fuji designation, including Fujisan Hongu Sengen Shrine and Miho no Matsubara.

The climbing season is short, July 10 - September 10 for the three routes in Shizuoka prefecture and July 1 - September 10 for the Yoshida trail in Yamanashi prefecture. Climbing Mt. Fuji has been on my Bucket List for a long time.

This is my latest photo of Mt. Fuji from near my home.  Summer and the rainy season cloudy days make it much more difficult to see than in the winter.

Are there any mountain peaks on your Bucket List? Have you climbed Mt. Fuji?

  1. Yes, I climbed her Mt Fuji in 1984. We started climbing at midnight and the stars grew larger and larger the closer to the peak we came. Going down took only a fraction of the time climbing up - we slid down on the lava gravel, but that also filled the shoes with small lava stones and my feet were red from the dust and the blood. Be sure to protect your feet, and hands.

  3. Wow, when I read climb a mountain I was thinking like...Everest. Nope, not for me. Then I got to thinking about some small mountains, like in the Great Smokies and my mind corrected itself. Yes, after reading Queenie's comment, I think I could handled Fuji. But I bet not. I think my foot would protest. Sure hope you get to do it, and I'm pretty sure you will.

  4. I'm not a big climber, though I do enjoy mountains. For a while I got obsessed with Mt Everest and I'd really like to - well not climb it, I'm nowhere near as skilled and fit as I would need to be for that, but to go somewhere where I can actually see it. I think I'd like to climb Fuji San as well - he's such a sight, but looks and sounds much more manageable than other iconic mountains!

  5. I haven't ventured to climb a mountain myself, but my son climbed Mt. Adams here in Washington State a couple of weeks ago, close to the same height at Fuji! I did drive to the top of Mauna Kea in Hawaii - over 14,000 ft above sea level - that was awesome!
