Kumamoto Castle was damaged in the April 2016 earthquake, but is in the process of being repaired. I was really surprised by how badly it was damaged, but happy I was able to see it from the outside. I can't imagine how long it will take to repair this castle.
Somehow, I did not end up following the tour route in order, but I think I walked all the way around and saw all of it.
It is sad to see the destruction that happens after an earthquake, the old stone structures seem to really suffer. But it is great to see it will be reconstructed. Thanks for the tour.
Interesting tour. Repairing historic buildings is always an engineering challenge and I enjoy reading about things like that; the time frame, funding, where the materials will come from etc. lots of fun info. It's a little like planning to restore an antique quilt if you think about it.
Wow, that is quite some damage! I'm glad to see they are repairing everything, but I wonder how the Japanese managed to preserve so many old buildings for all this time while having earthquakes regularly...
