Miho Beach Clean Up

Every year in early June the company where I work joins other groups for a clean up at Miho Beach. I was happy to join in last year and posted about it here. The environmental group invited me again this year and I was glad to say yes.  I couldn't see Mt. Fuji, unfortunately.

As with most Japanese events, there was a little kick off speech and welcome.

We were all given gloves, a set of pick up tongs, and a bag.  I picked up a lot of plastic and styrofoam what had washed in on the waves.  How sad to think how much plastic is out in the ocean.

At the end of the event, there was picture taking and a bottle of special green tea.

A nice way to spend a Saturday morning.

Yes, it is shocking to know how much underwater pollution there is. The Mediterranean is supposed to be the worst affected area The Plastic Sea.

  2. Very commendable!

I hope that wasn't a plastic bottle of green tea.

  4. Spending a Saturday morning cleaning up the beach sounds wonderful to me and it reminds me of when my co workers went to a reforestation project nearby and planted trees. I am trying in vain to get plastic out of my life and it seems next to impossible. I had the same thought as Vireya regarding the bottle.

  6. A very necessary activity. I too would like to eliminate plastic from my life, but it is so hard, so much plastic. At least Japan is conscientious about recycling. I find so much over-packaging here in the US, at the grocery store, drugstore, and everywhere else. It covers nearly every little product one buys from shavers and pens to eggs and potato chips, but not much is mandatory recycled. Still, the plastic recycling can is the biggest container in my kitchen now.

  7. Some weeks ago our community as well as the neighboring ones organized such a clean-up as well in and around the towns and villages. It's incredible to see how much trash and rubbish they collect in the woods and along the roads.

  8. Sadly such a necessary project Pamela... plastics are both the best & worst inventions EVER. I do often think, regardless of the enviro dangers, people are just so lazy if they cannot dispose of their plastics & other rubbish in the proper way, rather than just dumping it wherever they like. I bet the don't just throw empty bottles on their floors at home, they bin it... so why not do the same everywhere else?! Anyway, that's my rant.

  9. What a great event - good job joining in again! I do find it a bit ironic to give out plastic bottles of tea at the end, though, and sincerely hope none of them found their way back into the ocean!
