The word ichi means "one" (or in this case January), while go means "five" (fifth day). Pronounced together it is ichigo - the Japanese word for strawberry.
I forgot about ichi! Once we had baby birds -- and I named them (and I think I have this right but it's been a LONG TIME) -- Ichi, Ni, San, Shi, Go. Is that close?
It is a good day to eat strawberries on, but this year they are SO dear. Meny plantations were totally destroyed in the autumn's devastating floods. The farmers say it will take at least a year until there is another crop.
I'll have to go and see if there are any ready to pick in the garden!
ReplyDeletePamela: This is very interesting.

ReplyDeleteIsn’t it strange how words are formed!

I'll have to tell my friend about this as she is allergic to strawberries, they bring her out in an itchy rash.
ReplyDeleteToo bad there aren't a lot of real strawberries around this time of year!
