Prince Hisahito, nephew of the Japanese Emperor and second in line to the Imperial throne, attended the entrance ceremony of his new school, the University of Tsukuba's Senior High School at Otsuka in Tokyo. He was accompanied by his parents, the Crown Prince and Crown Princess.
Three years ago, he was in the news as he attended the entrance ceremony of Ochanomizu Junior High School.
Prince Hisahito is the third and youngest child of the Crown Prince and Crown Princess.
In Japan, elementary school is six years, junior high school is three years, and high school is three years. My students tell me that schools in our area are only allowing one family member to attend the entrance ceremony with the student, in order to keep the required distance between people to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
I never attended a school that had an entrance ceremony, but it seems that all schools in Japan have them.
In my school days in Sweden we had a First Day of Term, where we all gathered in the classroom, got our new timetable and text books. From day two lessons started.
At the end of the academic school year there was a ceremony, a gathering in the auditorium and a speech by the principal. Awards were given out and we sang a hymn. This ceremony was different for those students who graduated from senior highschool.
I have no idea how the start and end of a year is held these days.

ReplyDeleteIn Japan,entrance and graduation ceremonies are always held in kindergartens,elementary schools,junior high schools,high schools and universities.

Don’t think we have entrance ceremonies here. Graduations are usually for the finish of a university degree.

We had a bit of a celebration when we entered elementary school, but I wouldn't call it a ceremony! Nothing of the likes for highschool either.
