Yesterday marked twelve years since the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. The magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami that followed claimed the lives of 15,900 people. Miyagi prefecture had the highest death toll with 9,544, followed by Iwate Prefecture with 4,675, and Fukushima with 1,614. The National Police Agency reports that 2,523 people remain missing. The remains of 53 people are still unidentified.
The national government no longer hosts a memorial service, but municipalities in affected areas hold events at a reduced scale. Prime Minister Kishida reportedly attended a ceremony hosted by the Fukushima prefectural government.
Everyone in Japan knows another disaster could happen at any time and tries to prepare for it, while hoping and praying that it never does.
I will never forget that day twelve years ago. Some people see that day not only as a day of disaster, but as a day of hope for recover. In order not to forget that day, there are people who are working to prepare for future disasters by handing down the story. Let's support as people who live in the same Japan. And let's support each other and prepare.

ReplyDeleteIt is hard to believe it is so long ago! Such a terrible event, it is hard to comprehend the scale of so much loss.

Wow. Talk about time flying. That hardly seems possible.
ReplyDeleteWow, it's been so long...I understand how with a Tsunami there will be people who are never found, but I'm sad for those who have not been identified.
