Foundation Day

February 11th is the national holiday, Foundation Day, in Japan.  Since the 11th falls on a Sunday this year, it is observed on Monday, with a day off from work.

The history of this holiday marks the accession of Jimmu, the first Emperor of Japan, to the throne in 660 BC. It was established in 1872 as Empire Day in order to legitimize the rule of the Imperial family. Before WWII, the holiday was celebrated with large parades. Empire day was abolished after the war. In 1966, the holiday was reestablished as Foundation Day, to celebrate the founding of a nation.

  4. While less quaint than other Japanese holidays, a day off work is always nice, and I'm a bit jealous of this 'Happy Monday' system!
