Death on Mt. Fuji

This is sad news. Last Friday, a 55 year old man who was descending Mt. Fuji with his wife, lost consciousness and died. Kazuhiko Asakawa, a company executive from Tokyo, began climbing Mt. Fuji at 6 am, from the 5th station on the Yamanashi side. He and his wife reached the summit about 5 pm, then began descending. Around 6 pm, near the 8th station, he began feeling unwell, then lost consciousness. His wife contacted a nearby mountain hut, and he was transported to the 5th station by mountain crawler. He was confirmed dead later. Police reported he had no external injuries from falling rocks or slipping. There were no other details reported.

I can’t help wondering. Was it his dream to climb Fuji san? Did he have pre-existing health issues? How is his wife/climbing partner doing? Is it any consolation that they made it to the top and were descending when he started feeling unwell?

  1. We might never know the answers to your questions.
If the wish to climb Mt Fuji was on his bucket list, if he knew this was his last chance (due to health issues), if he and his wife accepted the risk involved and as they had reached the summit before he began to feel unwell, then it might after all be a 'good' way to go... however sad it is.
In my very personal belief, my end will come when it comes. It is not in my hands but predetermined by some natural or divine power. I hope for a 'good' end, though.

  2. Pamela: This is so sad to hear, I hope he was doing something he had always wanted to do, dying at such a young age, 55 for me is young me being 74.
I hope his wife is handling this as best she can, so sad to lose a family member in such a way.
Prayers for the repose of his soul being said today by me.
