Japan Post is releasing a commemorative stamp set, in honor of his fourth Most Valuable Player accomplishment. Ohtani’s National League MVP set will be priced at 7,260 yen, including tax and shipping (in Japan). Included are five 110 yen self-adhesive stamps depicting his career highlights, a specially made stamp holder and photos of memorable moments. Preorders are being accepted at post offices nationwide until January 21. Delivery is scheduled from April 12.
I won’t be ordering it, but based on Ohtani’s popularity in Japan, I’m guessing many people will be.
In the past, many people bought commemorative stamp sets as an investment. Now, when so many try to sell off their collections of records, kimonos, pottery or stamps, they find that the items are not worth much. A set of stamps like this would therefore, in 20 years' time, only be worth the actual postage value - 550 yen, a big loss of money. I like Shohei Ohtani and admire his skills but I will not 'invest' in these stamps.
