In April, Japan announced it will cut passport application fees to encourage overseas travel and to help raise Japan’s relatively low passport holder rate.
Under the revised law, the 10 year passport fee for applicants 18 and over will change from the current 16,300 yen to 9,300 yen. The current fees for the five year passport for applicants aged 12 to 17 (11,300 yen) and for children under 12 (6,300 yen) will be replaced with the fee of 4,800 yen for all. The lower fees will apply to applications submitted beginning July 1st. All online applications will be discounted by 400 yen.
Unfortunately, with the increased cost of jet fuel, airfares are rising exponentially, and fewer people can fly anywhere.
That's amazing! 9300yen equals $82 Australian at the moment. An Australian 10-year passport is currently $422. Lots of Australians are travelling to Japan these days. I think the general unfriendliness of the US is helping tourism in other places.
Swedish passports are valid for 5 years for those 12 years and older. Children under 12 need to renew their passports every 3 years. The cost is 8.500 yen whatever your age. Compared with a 10 year Japanese passport, the sum is thus 17.000 yen.
For those who have their passports issued at an embassy the cost is even higher - 27.100 yen for a 5 year passport. That's 54.200 yen compared to the Japanese passport cost of 9.300 yen. You need to be rich to travel! Still a lot of Swedish people travel abroad. They must be rich!

Nice to see the price of something coming down! When I lived in NZ back in the 80's we used to get a lot of Japanese tourists.
