I often hear/read about tourists who complain about having to carry around their trash when they are visiting Japan and about Japanese residents who complain about tourists leaving trash around because they can’t find a trash can. East Japan Railway (JR East) has come up with a solution that solves the problem and is fun to use.
These mobile trash can robots will be rolling around Shinjuku Station on a trial basis for now. They are designed to look like little train cars, with labels to show what trash goes where. I think they are cute.
Shinjuku Station is known for being the busiest station in the world, so if the trial goes well here, it should work at other stations.
Hi Pamela: I walk my dog and carry a bag just in case I see trash, it bothers me that someone who visits another country weather it be Japan or some other place that they find it okay to drop trash on the ground. I am happy to see that the station has found a way to help with the problem, they are kind of cute.
I think this is a great idea! In the UK they solved the tossed-away-butt problem by having people put their stubbed-out cigarettes in a box with a questions and slots for two alternative answers. Example: Will it snow on Christmas Eve? Will Argentina win the Soccer World Cup?
