Today is a national holiday in Japan - Coming of Age Day (成人の日). This holiday is held annually on the second Monday in January to congratulate all those who have reached the age of 20 (age of majority) in the previous year. Ceremonies are held and parties with friends and families.
Many 20 year old women choose to dress in kimono and all the accessories. Some men wear the traditional hakama, but many choose to wear western suits. It is a very happy time.
Coming of age is a great thing to celebrate - I love the Japanese holidays and it makes me happy to see that even young adults are still willing to participate in a tradition like this :)
Hi Pamela happy holiday sounds like a fun day xx
ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting cultural event! Congratulations to all the 20-yr-olds.
ReplyDeleteI think it is great that the REST of the population also get a holiday! A good chance to quilt, maybe?!
