In Japan, it is heartwarming to see how older siblings help younger siblings. In the US, I noticed more sibling rivalry than sibling harmony. Maybe there is just more rivalry and competition overall in the US.
I think in Japan, everyone in a family has a 'role' to play. The first born boy is called 'Onii-chan' (Big Brother) and not by his given name, the eldest girls goes by 'Onee-chan' (Big Sister) instead of her real name. This shows their role as a leader for the siblings, someone for the younger ones to look up to, and also puts a bit of pressure, and pride, on them, to set an example. In a sense they play the role of 'sub-Mum and sub-Dad'. What do you think, Pamela?

Seeing siblings together is often heartwarming to me. Whether they fight or help each other, most of the times you still feel the love :)
