Stitch Group Sunday
We met on Sunday and worked on our Hawaiian projects. I haven’t worked on mine much, while everyone else made a lot of progress. I plan to work on mine more before we meet again. I’m not very happy with my appliqué technique, but I will try harder.
I didn’t take many pictures because I was so caught up with trying to understand what was being talked about. One topic was thimbles and how to use them. I don’t use a thimble when quilting, so I was no help. We viewed a YouTube video, but I don’t know if it helped anyone. That led to pronouncing thimble.“TH” is a difficult sound for many Japanese speakers. (I often hear Sank you, for Thank you.) I tried to give other examples of words with TH, and a new word for everyone was Thumb, which turned out to be funny.
This stitcher(above) has finished her appliqué and is preparing to sandwich hers to make it into a wall hanging.
The other three stitchers are making cushions. The stitcher on the left is making a two color, two sided cushion. I will try to remember to take a picture next time.
Tea time was delicious, with souvenirs from various Golden Week travels. If you are wondering if we ate all of this in one sitting, we didn’t. We all had some for later or for breakfast.
I’m already looking forward to our next get together.

I am sure there are many quilt groups, the world over, that discuss whether using a thimble is necessary or not.
In my opinion, it is a very personal choice. The same goes for using a hoop or not.
In most cases I use a quilting hoop and if I am quilting a very thin sandwich, then I can scoop up several stitches and progress fast. The thicker or bulkier the layers are, the fewer stitches I can manage to put on the needle, and the slower the pace is. I sometimes have to stab-stitch some tricky areas.
When I am quilting something small, I often skip the hoop and control the tension with my hands and take one stitch at a time.
I have a friend who is an award-winning quilter. She uses neither a hoop nor a thimble. Instead, she uses the tabletop to control the tension and often work up a pea-sized callus on her finger!

The Hawaiian pieces are looking lovely, they have worked hard. I automatically put on one of my thimbles before I cut thread! I have a small one for embroidery and a chunkier one for quilting. Couldn't sew without. xx
The Hawaiian projects are lovely, I am not a thimble used, although sometimes I think I should be!!
This looks like such fun and such a good group. I always enjoy your stitchers posts!
Hello Pamela: This looks like a very fun group of ladies, the Hawaiian designs is lovely, I am looking forward to seeing them all finished.
I do not use a thimble, I find them to be a nuisance.

How nice to share those lovely projects with your friends. Thimble is no help for me but my fingers are not thanking me. xxx
I got some silicone thimbles that I use sometimes when the fabric is too thick and stiff to easily push the needle through, but most of the time I stitch and sew without one.
