Big Tokyo Weekend - Quilt Show #3 Oz
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I don't think most Japanese people are familiar with the L. Frank Baum series of fantasy children's books written in the early 1900's. I loved them as a child and still do today. Even most Americans may not know about the series of books, only the 1939 movie that starred Judy Garland as Dorothy.
One section of the show was dedicated to a Wizard of Oz exhibit. All of the things in it were fabric or quilt items. My camera battery died before I was finished taking pictures, so some of these were taken by Queenie and shared with me.

Saw the movie on television when I was about 5. I was briefly living in an area prone to tornados, and well, the film scared me, primarily for that reason.
Hi Pamela, omg what an amazing display,i have seen the wizard of Oz on TV and loved it,i have also read the book when i was at primary school.
So fun, a quilt show! What a treat to be able to go there!
I read the Wizard of Oz books, yes, and loved them. A neighbor woman had
them all and let me and my sisters borrow them. Good memories.
I have seen that mSovie soooo many times! The displays are so cool. So glad you got to go.

Yes, I read a lot of the books as a child. I remember when my dd came to me and said" There are a lot of Wizard of Oz books!"
I have seen the film, but must confess I don't remember much of the story. Nor did I know about the series of books until you told me at the show. It was an impressive display of emerald green, the huge hot air ballon and all the flying monkeys.
The movie is so wonderful. I have the film on dvd.
Best wishes Manuela
I really want to read the books - Or at least a few of them. Frank L Baum was born very close to where I live http://www.oz-stravaganza.com/
I read the Wizard of Oz as a kid then read the others as an adult. It is wonderful to see a literary quilt theme. The flying monkeys ate hilarious!!
The closest I got to the Wizard is knowing all the songs from Wicked by heart and that one Supernatural episode . I guess Germany is the same as Japan in that regard, Oz isn't just as well known here. I do plan to read the books sometimes though, I still love reading 'children's' books :D
