I have heard that because of the pandemic, border controls and stay at home policy, the amount of narcotics in circulation in Sweden has reduced. However, the drug dealers get desperate and mix in all sorts of things to compensate for the lack of merchandise. This means drugs get 'dirtier' and the addicts suffer even more.
Other types of crime that have increased during the pandemic, all over the world I would guess, are domestic violence and child abuse, and what about cyber crimes...
Japan is really a safe place to live, in and out of pandemics, not counting natural disasters of course (typhoons, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunami, tornados, extreme heat, flooding you name it...)
I haven't heard much about crime in our area. I'll have to look into that. I'm so glad you are safe and feel that way. Rick always said Japan was a very safe place to be (if you don't get an earthquake!)
Generally crime has reduced here in Aus, but cyber crime has increased sadly. Therr is always someone looking to make money from someone else. The latest I have heard of is a phone call telling you, you have been near a diagnosed person, a test kit will be sent out but you have to pay $50. Shame these people can't put their minds to doing some good in the world.
Good News! I'm pretty sure crime is up in the USA.
xx, Carol
I have yet to see any statistics about how the lockdowns affected crime rates here, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them go down, at least certain types of crimes.
