Yugawara - Joganji Temple

This temple’s website is here. According to Japan Travel : “ About 900 years ago, this temple got its start with Sagami Dohi-go Village's powerful Dohi Jirosanehira to pray for the clan's prosperity far into the future. A 900-year-old Chinese juniper tree that towers over worshipers is said to have been planted by Dohi Sanehira (who built the Jibutsudo sanctuary on the grounds). The Ministry of Education has designated it a Natural Monument.”

I was the only person at the temple and the stone steps and pathways were very mossy and slick. I felt it was rather dangerous, but I held on to the railing and didn’t fall.

This was an interesting place, but had a spooky vibe to it.

More Yugawara to come…

I agree, it looks quite spooky. The grounds are on a mountain slope and difficult to keep meticulously tidy. Instead, it is a bit overgrown with grass, bushes and weeds. The byakushin tree is magnificent! I wonder if the last photo is of a cluster of grave stones? It looks almost Indian (Hindu) to me.
During the rainy season, many surfaces get mossy and slippery, so do take care.

Interesting place to visit - why the pink hoods and capes? Beautiful old tree.
