Hiroshima Toshogu Shrine

This historic shrine was constructed in 1648 to honor Tokugawa Ieyasu.  


As with all shrines and temples in Japan, there were many steps.

The gate looks fantastic in the last picture with its red colour and iron fortifications.
Actually, I think the gate is most unusual as it has a long wall/fence along both sides. Most temple gates are standing alone, just flanked by the two guardian deities Nio, aren't they?
