One of my students told me about a special deal the JR train company offers three times a year. For 11,850 yen, you can purchase five one day train passes that can be used all over Japan on local and rapid trains (not on Shikansen or express trains).
The current time period is December 10th - January 10th. Yes, I bought the five ticket package!

I think Sapporo is a bit too far away for a one day trip on the local trains, how about Matsumoto or Takayama?
I think I've heard of this offer before as a cheap way to get around Japan when visiting! I'm guessing you won't be going that far without being able to use the bullet train, but maybe a trip to Tokyo?
