A&W Root Beer in Japan

When we were in Okinawa, we had to stop at A&W for a root beer float. Vanilla ice cream with cold foamy root beer poured over it - yum!  It seems that Okinawa is the only place in Japan to get A&W root beer, thanks to the American military there. Why can’t we get root beer in Hokkaido?

I recently read an article on RocketNews24 about why almost all Japanese people hate root beer. The article said Japanese people think that root beer tastes like medicine. Apparently there is a pain relief patch that smells like root beer, so people here associate the taste of root beer with this pain relief medicine.
What do you think about root beer - do you like it or hate it?

Getting Ready for the Yuki Matsuri

The 66th annual Snow Festival in Sapporo begins next week with a Star Wars theme. Ted and I were in Sapporo on Wednesday and saw these preparations in Odori Park. It's amazing to see how all this snow becomes huge snow sculptures.

There were a few snow flurries in Sapporo, but when we got to the bus station, we were told all busses to our town were canceled because there was a blizzard that closed the highway.  Luckily, the trains were still running, so we did get home.

IIES New Year Party 2015

Sunday we attended the annual international exchange society’s new year party. Hard to believe this is the fourth we’ve attended! (2012, 2013, and 2014).

Ted made a crock pot of baked beans, a typical American dish that many Japanese people haven’t tasted.  There was a lot of delicious food!

After  being welcomed to the party, we all filled our plates.

After eating and eating, the game playing began.  First we played a fun gambling game. Each person started with a ten yen coin and did the Japanese version of rock paper scissors with someone else.  The winner took the loser’s coin and the loser lined up behind the winner. This went on with the losers lining up behind the winners into longer snake-like lines until there were just two winners with lines.  One of the two lost and the other took all of the ten yen coins.  I lost my first round, but Ted was winning for quite a long time until he lost.

Next we played bingo. Everyone seemed to really like this simple game. There were many prize bags that bingo winners could choose from.  Ted won a bottle of soy sauce and I won a fancy box of chocolates.

We wrote New Year’s resolutions on a paper shaped like a house with Japanese pictures on it and taped it to the wall at the beginning of the party.  After bingo, we read our resolutions.

Soon after that it was time to go home. It was a great international get-together with people from Japan, the US, Canada, and Italy.

2015 Smalls SAL - Miniature Bedspread

For this year’s Smalls Stitch A Long, I am stitching miniature pieces (1 inch to 1 foot scale).  This month I made a bedspread for a miniature bed. The pattern comes from Needlework Designs for Miniature Projects by Eileen Folk.  It’s a thin Dover Needlework Series book with about 50 pages and a lot of ideas for dollhouses. The bedspread is done in cross stitch on hardanger fabric (22 count) with two strands of DMC floss.

Check out Stitching Lotus to see the smalls other Stitch A Long participants have completed this month!

How Others See Us

Our almost five year old neighbor gave us these pictures he drew of us.  Are my eyelashes really that long?
