This is Kamakura’s most important shrine. It was founded in 1063 by Minamoto Yoriyoshi, then enlarged and moved to its current site in 1180 by Minamoto Yoritomo, who was the founder and first shogun of the Kamakura government. The shrine is dedicated to Hachiman, the patron god of the Minamoto family and of samurai in general.
It is walking distance from the Kamakura station, along a walkway in the center of the road.
The shrine and grounds are large and beautiful.
A famous sweet in Kamakura is a large cookie in the shape of a dove, Hato Sable. This is the place to buy them.
This small temple is almost hidden from view as one walks along the sidewalk between Hase-dera and the Enoden train to Kamakura Station. The sign below explains the history.
