Happy Birthday to Empress Emerita Michiko!
Yesterday Japanese Empress Emerita Michiko (mother of the current Emperor Naruhito) celebrated her 89th birthday. Her husband, the Emperor Emerita will turn 90 in December. In the afternoon, she and her husband received a visit from Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, and Princess Aiko.
Aren't they a sweet couple? I wish her a very happy birthday!

They are indeed a sweet couple.
I was among the crowds lining the streets of Tokyo as their carriage procession after their wedding went by. What excitement! The story was that they met playing tennis in Karuizawa (where we spent part of one summer)and it was a big deal at that time that she was a commoner. I remember collecting the special postage stamps issued to commemorate the occasion. Still a big fan and that is a lovely picture of them.
