Aka Island, Okinawa
This
trip we spent a few days on Aka Island. We left the main island from Tomari
Port on the Queen Zamami, which goes to both Zamami and Aka Islands. It was a
fast boat and the water was a little rough from the wind. It took a little over
an hour to get to our island on the ferry.
Ted
went snorkeling, but the water was too cold for me. I stitched and looked for shells.
We took
a slower big ferry to the other island when we met the whale watching group and
rode on the top deck.
On Aka we
stayed at Kawai Guest House, right on the beach. It’s a basic place to stay, with the shower
and toilet shared with the other guest rooms.
Breakfast
and dinner were included. The food
served was caught (fish) and grown (vegetables and eggs) by the owners and was wonderful!
It was
slow and relaxing on the island. We hiked to observatories for some beautiful
views and walked on the beach.
We had
lunch on our own and this time of year there was only one restaurant open. This restaurant served three things –
Okinawan soba, curry rice, and taco rice, all with meat. I bought yogurt at the
little store and Ted ate and liked the Okinawan soba with big slabs of pork. We
ate outside with a beautiful view.
The
place with the green roof at the end of the beach was where we stayed. In the evening deer came out of the woods and
walked down the beach.
In the
mornings, I sat on the deck and stitched with coffee before breakfast, while
Ted took pictures.
I’d go
back there in a heartbeat. It was wonderful.
