Go to Jail, Go Directly to Jail, Do Not Pass Go
I read in Japan Today that the Tokyo Metro Police Department has arrested 525 people for violating the Road Traffic Act when they failed to pay fines for traffic violations between July 2015 and October 2017. In June, the Traffic Enforcement Division strengthened its investigation of these criminals and had them arrested. The committed offenses include ignoring traffic signals and operating a mobile phone while driving. In the US, there isn't enough jail space for the violent offenders, let alone the traffic offenders. If you live in Japan, pay your fines! Better yet, be more careful to follow the traffic laws.

Not only residents, but tourists and visitors should follow the laws in Japan. Drug related crimes lead to LONG and harsh prison sentences and now even traffic violations might put you behind bars.

They're tough but good for then. I wish we were a little tougher here.
Oh Geez. In the USA, law enforcement has turned jail happy. Every single day I read or see a story in the news where the police abused their power. And going to jail for a small violation is ridiculous. I bet I could come up with a more useful punishment.

Maybe some community time might encourage people to pay their fines.
In Germany, you don't pay nearly enough for the breaking of some traffic laws (stuff that many people consider 'minor', like driving too fast). In Switzerland, on the other hand, driving too fast can easily cost you a few thousand francs. I wonder if they put people in jail as well if they don't pay?
