Babies on the Plane

When I am traveling, there is nothing I like less than a screaming baby on the plane. I know, I know, they can't help screaming.  That doesn't mean I like it or want to be near it.

Japan Airlines (JAL) has unveiled an online booking tool that indicates where toddlers will be seated.  When passengers with children between eight days and two years old reserve their seat, a child icon automatically appears on the seat plan, alerting other passengers who have not yet selected their seats. Another Japanese airline, All Nippon Airways, says its seat maps also show where children are seated. I think this should be mandatory for all online airline booking sites. This isn't fool proof, I realize.  A baby could book after I do, and some babies can be heard no matter how far away you are.

Does it bother you to be seated near a baby?  Is there anything else that annoys you on a plane?

I recently flew Japan Airlines to Tokyo, I noticed the baby icon when selecting our seats,. As soon as I board I put on my head phones, the babies don’t worry me but I cannot tolerate passengers who sniff for 15 hours and don’t blow their noses.

Apart from not enough leg room (or the frustrations of when someone ahead of you puts back their seat and you just can't move or even see the video screen) not much else bothers me. But I have had the experience of sitting next to a screaming child on an overseas flight and I think JAL has a good idea.

I love babies, even if they're crying. I like old people too and a lot of people have no patience with them either.
Life can be rough, I've been in difficult situations before and someone helped me or said a kind word. I always remember
that and I want to be like them.

Well, my secret is that I have never been on a plane. But when I do fly somewhere I'm pretty sure I don't want to be anywhere near a baby. My husband is the baby person. Little kids and babies love him. Once when one of my grandson's friends was visiting with their baby, the little girl crawled up into Terry's lap and said "Safe". Very touching. L love OUR babies and can't wait to see our great grand.

Interesting idea with the plane seating. Babies don't bother me, I understand it is hard flying with young children and having done it I understand how a parent feels. You just have to be patient.

I know there was quite some uproar about this change, but I don't get it - it's not like the parents have any disadvantage from it. I never had to sit next to a crying baby on a plane, but I always think it's good to give people a choice.
