Respect for the Aged Day (Keiro no Hi, 敬老の日)

Tomorrow is the national holiday in Japan that celebrates elders and their contributions to society. It became a national holiday in 1966 and until 2003 was observed on September 15th. Now it is part of the Happy Monday System, taking place on the third Monday in September.

Japan and Palau are the only countries in the world which have national holidays dedicated to the elderly. Currently, Japan has the largest percentage of people over 100 years old of any country.

Do you do something to celebrate the elderly in your life? (Or do you consider yourself elderly and celebrate yourself?)

I have always been surrendered by 'oldies'. I have and will continue to celebrate them. Maybe it is now time to celebrate my own advancing years?

All four of my grandparents have passed away, but when they were still healthy, I used to give them their favorite foods as gifts. I had so much fun choosing presents every year.
