Shichi Go San

Today is a Japanese holiday, but not a national/get off work holiday. It’s more of a time to celebrate the growth and well being of children who are ages 7, 5, and 3. Families often celebrate on a day near to the holiday, such as the weekend before or after.

The special day celebrates the growth, health, and happiness of 3 and 7 year old girls and 3 and 5 year old boys. The children (dressed in kimono or suits) and their families typically go to shrines or temples for blessings and to pray for health and happiness, and to take photos. Children receive a special long red and white candy called chitose-ame, which symbolizes longevity.

If you go to a large shrine or temple on a weekend day in mid-November, you are likely to see happy families with children.
