A&W Root Beer in Japan

When we were in Okinawa, we had to stop at A&W for a root beer float. Vanilla ice cream with cold foamy root beer poured over it - yum!  It seems that Okinawa is the only place in Japan to get A&W root beer, thanks to the American military there. Why can’t we get root beer in Hokkaido?

I recently read an article on RocketNews24 about why almost all Japanese people hate root beer. The article said Japanese people think that root beer tastes like medicine. Apparently there is a pain relief patch that smells like root beer, so people here associate the taste of root beer with this pain relief medicine.
What do you think about root beer - do you like it or hate it?

I can't say if I hate it or not since I've never tried it. But I can understand about not liking something cause it reminds you of medicine. Personally I can't eat/drink anything (artificial) flavored with grape or cherry. Reminds me too much of the cold medicine Tylenol made when I was little.

I love root beer, reminds me of family outings to get burgers at the local A&W! Fun times, root
beer floats are delish. Enjoy, you two!

It's my DS' favorite soft drink. It's not my fave but I do like it as a float.

I have also heard Japanese people say it tastes like medicine. I think the taste is unique and interesting rather than delicious. Maybe because it is not part of my childhood tastes.

I always liked root beer and I LOVED root beer floats (back when I could have sugar and dairy). I actually worked at an A&W when I was in high school. Fun memories! I suppose having a medicinal patch that smells like the soda would be off putting. Interesting to know!
