The Bucket List

The Bucket List is a 2007 movie starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. It is about two old terminally ill men who make a list of all the things they want to do before they "kick the bucket" and embark on a big trip to do those things.

One of my upper level classes had a lesson about work and personal life balance.  Like many Japanese workers, my students work long hours for many years at the same company. It seems a little unbalanced to me, but this is the Japanese work culture.

I assigned this class, then other of my higher level students to make a bucket list.  At first, they all found this to be a strange thing to think about, let alone put thoughts to paper, but they all seemed to get into it and make some great lists! I really learned a lot about my students with this assignment. Some of the items made me smile (go to Tokyo in a taxi), others made me realize how important family is for them (see the face of a grandchild, take care of parents in old age, getting married). Some had travel dreams (Hawaii, the pyramids in Egypt, Spain, all 47 prefectures in Japan, Yakushima), some had experience dreams (scuba dive in Okinawa, climb Mt. Everest, drive on the autobahn in Germany, play on center court at Wimbledon), others eating or drinking dreams (eat authentic Italian food in Italy, drink German beer in Germany). I could go on and on.  They really did a great job with this lesson.

My bucket list is quite long, and while I realize I may not do all the things on it, I feel very fortunate to be able to tick some off and add more to it all the time. Do you have a bucket list?  What do you want to do in this life?

Great assignment. Not only did the students have to use English to express themselves, but also take a good look at themselves and the future.

What a great idea! On my bucket list is to take the Master Craftsman class through EGA. Will I ever be good enough?

Both husband and I have a bucket list. Mine consists of hobby things I want to try and do as well as volunteer opportunities. My husband and I share a travel bucket list...along with who we want to travel with. We are lucky that we will be traveling with extended family from both his and my sides of the family this year. I loved the movie "The Bucket List." Highly recommend it for anyone who hasn't seen it. --Andrea

I have a stitching bucket list. It's really a list of all the places I want to travel to, to either see a piece or take a class. I really should write it down somewhere :)

I don't have a bucket list per se, but I regularly make lists of stuff I want to do and try. Some things get done, some things don't, and sometimes I don't even want to do any more after a while. One thing that remains is that I want to go to Japan, and I hope I can tick that off soon!
