The Hachijo Jima Weaving Factory
This was one of my favorite places! Kihachijo is the name given to the woven silk fabric from this island. The name means yellow fabric made in Hachijo, but it covers all the yellow, brown, and black dyes used.
There was a short movie that explained the process of collecting the wood and plants to make the dyes, then the dying of the silk, and the making of the cloth. The main colors are yellow, brown and black. It was a very interesting film.
There were many beautiful items for sale, all very expensive. I bought some little fobs and some post cards for omiyage, but the other gorgeous things were out of my price range.
If you go to Hachijo jima, don't miss visiting this place!

That looks like a very interesting place to visit! I can understand why items would be expensive, if the dyeing and then the weaving is all done by hand. Beautiful to look at, anyway!

Films or demonstrations of how to produce these expensive items prove how much work has gone into each one. Unfortunately these things are usually far too expensive for our budgets.

How interesting! So they dye the threads, than weave different patterns with the different shades of yellow/brown? It's a beautiful effect.
