A New Project - Mola
In January 2018, I saw the "In Praise of Molas - Fumiko Nakayama" exhibit at the Tokyo Great International Quilt Festival. That year Queenie and two other stitchers challenged themselves to complete a mola project. Her finished bag can be seen here.
Since then, I've wanted to make a mola. The stitch group has decided to do this as our next project. This week I have begun my project. I chose three colors to begin - purple, yellow, and blue.
I sketched a little fish as a sort of pattern.
Using my white sashiko pencil, I traced it onto the fabric.
The white lines will be my cutting lines so I basted around them.
I was able to get a small start.
Stay tuned to see what happens next!

That looks like an interesting project!
I hope you will have as much fun as I did.
What I learned while making my bag was that fabrics that easily fray are hard to handle. I think Fumiko Nakayama always uses cotton with a high thread count.
Looking forward to your progress and that of your group.
Its a lovely technique - have fun! xx
I can't wait to see what happens because I have no idea of what a mola is.
It is going to be a beautiful piece of art.
Looks like an interesting project, can't wait to see what your group do.
I'm not entirely sure what a Mola is, but I'm looking forward to seeing it develop!
