NIhondaira Night Zoo

Saturday, I went to the night version of Nihondaira Zoo with two friends.  The admission time for night zoo was 5:30 - 8:30 pm and the fee was 610 yen. We arrived a few minutes early and waited with many others, excited to see the animals at night.  While we waited, we planned our route on the zoo map (available in Japanese and English versions).

Our first stop was the Red Panda house. The panda could travel from inside to outside, but it was hard to see him (her?) outside.

Next stop was the animal poop exhibit.

Next was the monkey area, but it was very dark for photos.

The polar bear after that! He was very active and everyone was excited to watch. His fur looked kind of green though.

The giraffes and elephant were inside for the night.

This photo is one of my favorites of the night, taken from above the polar bear pool.

Next, the Fierce Animals.  Most of them were ready for bedtime.

The meercats are in the lion house, but they were hiding, so I took a picture of the poster on the wall.

The wallabies were still awake.

The lights were all on in the nocturnal house, so many of the animals were sleeping.  During the day, they have red lights on so the animals think it is night and you can see them moving around.  At night the lights are on, so the nocturnal animals think it is day.

I always like the reptile house at the zoo.

Penguins in blue.

Before leaving we stopped by the red panda house again. So cute!

After the zoo, we had Indian food for dinner.  (I'm not the only one who takes photos of my food.)

What a fun evening!  Thanks Suwa and Rumi!

Many years ago at Melbourne zoo, I overheard a little girl ask her father what the red panda was, and he said it was a "fox possum". So that's been my name for them ever since!

LOVE the red panda and polar bear. But I have to say, I've never been anywhere that there is a poop exhibit! Gorgeous shots of the big cats.
