Palau de la Musica Catalana
My friend who blogs at Jacaranda, Textiles and Travel, emailed me about the Palau. She visited, then blogged about it in June and thought I would be interested. I appreciate the recommendation!
Palau de La Musica Catalana means Palace of Catalan Music. It was designed by architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner and was built between 1905 and 1908 for the choral society Orfeo Catala. It opened February 9, 1908. Between 1982 and 1989, the building underwent extensive restoration, remodeling and extension. In 1997, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The concert hall of the Palau seats 2,200 people and is the only auditorium in Europe that is illuminated during daylight hours entirely by natural light. The large overhead stained glass skylight is an inverted dome. It was designed by Antoni Rigalt. On the day of my tour, there was a performance for children and the theater was full of school children!
