Dream Jobs of Japanese Children

Adecco, a Japanese company that provides human resource services, conducted a nationwide survey of 900 elementary and junior high school boys and girls about what they wanted to be when they grow up.  I always like these type of surveys. This one is especially interesting because it shows the differences between children of different school ages. Here are the survey results.

Does any of this surprise you? Why do so many Japanese girls want to be pastry bakers?  Is it because of all the cute little desserts here? Why do office worker type jobs go from the bottom of the list to the top in both girls and boys from elementary to junior high school?

What do you think would be the answers from children in your country today? What about children when you were in elementary or junior high school?

This very interesting. When I was young at primary school you wanted to be either a teacher, ballet dancer, fireman or policeman. The way the world has changed due to technology, children probably want to be in that industry. My husband has found it extremely hard to find electrical apprentices...money/wages seem to be high on their list. When our daughter told her teacher she wanted to be an engineer, he said that was for males. In her work department, 8 females and 1 male!!

The change is interesting, I wonder if it is to do with job security? Or rate of pay?

I heard that office workers children thought it was cool to see their parents teleworking.

I have no idea what our kids would want but I LOVE that being a baker is something these young women continue to want, even as they grow older!

I think Japanese girls, of all ages, love to EAT cakes. You know how popular All You Can Eat Cake Buffets are. So to become someone who can make the cakes AND eat them just be a dream job.
The change from elementary to junior high school is that you see reality. Being a salaried offies worker is the most realistic job, all the private piano teacher kind of jobs are risky or impossible unless you have the funds to set them up.
When I was in school singers and models were high on the list, and for boys ice hockey players.
What did YOU dream of becoming when you were little school girl, Pamela?

I believe somewhere between Elementary and Junior High, students start to focus more on what's realistic. It also might be that they start looking up more directly to 'sensible' roles models, e.g., the father who's reliable and provides for his family, rather than some action hero.

That is very interesting. I wanted to be a doctor and that stayed my dream until post-secondary when I decided to switch to Software engineering.
