Crime in Tokyo

I read about this crime story that happened in Tokyo on the Japan Today website. It's hard to believe that there is no bigger crime story in Tokyo to report on, but this is Japan.

A 51 year old unemployed man was arrested for making nine hundred eleven nuisance calls to a single police station in Tokyo. The man admitted to making the calls during a three month period from both his landline and cell phone. One day he made a total of 72 calls.  Sometimes he called and said he killed another person, other times he said he was using illegal drugs, and still other times he remained silent. The man said he made the calls because he was unhappy with how the police station had responded to an inquiry he made in the past. Maybe he should be calling for mental health services.

Japan is a nation of happy, cheerful and friendly people. This cheeriness is taught and fostered from an early age, at home but especially at nursery and elementary schools. Having many friends is everyone's wish. It is actually a standard phrase, 友達をいっぱい作りたい (tomodachi wo ippai tsukuritai) (want to make a lot of friends).
So what happens if you are not cheerful by nature and have not learned it? What happens if you can not have many friends and don't become popular in school? I think it is obvious that you become an outcast. With there pressure from yourself, your family and society, this must become a stigma.
I think that is how stalkers are made...
The man in the news report was probably so frustrated with not being accepted, of not 'having made friends with the police that he turned into a police stalker.
Smile and be kind to someone today, and the world will be a better place!

Poor guy needs a life. And yes, mental health assistance.

Maybe the news printed this article for people to get a giggle? Although I'm sure many people will be outraged at the waste of police resources! I'm just surprised it took so long to catch him, if he was using his own phone line.
