I admit it - I don't own an umbrella. One of my students told me that proves I am not Japanese. People here love umbrellas. I'm rather fond of my raincoat and other rain gear. Umbrellas are easily lost or broken. According to this train station poster, an umbrella is also dangerous!

Rain gear is great when you spend a long time outdoors and can remove the Macintosh and Wellies once indoors. An umbrella is excellent when the rain is light and you pop in and out of buses, shops and other places.
I agree that umbrellas are easily left behind, for example on trains.
As the poster shows, umbrellas can be dangerous, especially when you don't use them with care. Both open and closed umbrellas can poke out eyes!
Other dangerous items are walking sticks and walking stocks. As these often have a wristband they appear to be an extension of one's hand. I knew an old lady who, on her daily walks, often stopped to point at something in the distance. By raising her hand and the 'extended hand' she knocking over both people and things. People around her needed to be very observant!
I carry a fold-up umbrella in my handbag all year round!

I love walking in the rain under an umbrella. mine is a big one and lives in the car.
I guess I am like you, I don't like carrying an umbrella if I can avoid it at all! They keep getting in the way when it's not raining, and I keep losing them LOL
