Crime in Japan - Dead Crows

Crows in Japan are big and smart and noisy. The big scary beaks look like they could tear you apart. And did I say they are noisy?

Police in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture arrested a 63 year old man on suspicion of violating the wildlife protection and hunting law by poisoning thirteen crows. Jun Hattori, a hospital staff member, has admitted to the charges, and has been quoted as saying, "the crows were cawing loudly every morning".

Hattori fed scraps of food containing the pesticide cyanophos at a temple compound and parking lot. Thirteen crows died and were found by the head priest at the temple, who called the police. Hattori was identified by surveillance camper footage. I don't know what the penalty is for this crime.

I don't advocate killing any kind of bird, but if you have ever seen and heard these crows, you might understand why Hattori did what he admits doing. Actually, I've read crows keep the mice and rat populations down in cities in Japan, so maybe they are good. They are really noisy though.

Crows are aggressive, too. When they are protecting their young, they will go to any length to get food and to keep people away from their nests. In some areas in Tokyo, you are advised to walk under an open umbrella (even when it is not raining) so the crows won't come flying and attacking your head.
They ARE pestilent, noisy and scary, but they do keep other pests at bay, like mice and rats. If crows were to be extinct, we'd miss them!

I hate crows and am afraid of them. And I know that crows are very smart.
I understand the feelings of the man who poisoned the crow and killed it, but don't do it yourself.
The government is working on extermination of crows as well as pests, so it would be a good idea to consult with them first.

If you have a problem with crows on your balcony or garden, try hanging discs that you no longer use.
I heard that crows don't like glitter.

I love crows...I know they can be noisy and scary, but they are also highly intelligent! I hope this man is punished for killing them, and doesn't just get a slap on the wrist.
