Happy Valentine's Day!

What do you think of Valentine's Day?

In the US, when I was a child in school, students always decorated a shoebox in class and children gave each other paper valentines. Someone's mother would make cupcakes and we would have a little party in the classroom.  I don't know if they still do that.  As I got older, I thought of Valentine's Day as a Hallmark holiday.

In Japan, women give men chocolate on Valentine's Day. This is not just chocolate to the boyfriend or spouse.  There is "obligation" chocolate given to other men.  Weird, I know.  It's not just one way, there is another holiday on March 14th where men give gifts to women.

Happy Valentine's Day, or just happy day!

We have never celebrated Valentines Day as our wedding anniversary is 10th February. My husband and I firmly believe that you don’t need a special day to tell someone you love them.

We didn't have Valentines Day celebrations when I was growing up, we thought of it as an American custom, now of course it is everywhere. Hubby does not believe in it says it is hugely over commercialised, but I think it is a good day to tell people you love them

I agree that it has become commercialised, but I think this special day makes a good mark on the calendar. In Sweden the autumn and winter seem to last forever as they are so very dark, cold and gloomy. Then in December things change, although the weather is darker, colder and gloomier than ever, there is hope for good things to come - the Nobel Prize festivities, St Lucia Day (13th), Winter holiday, Christmas and New Year. I think other festivities give us something to look forward to and enjoy with special food and decorations. So I will always love St Valentines Day and the smell of a chocolate cake baking in the oven. It will be shared with the whole family.
Happy St Valentine's Day, Pamela. I wish I could send you a slice of cake.

It's not something I grew up with, so it doesn't mean anything to me. It seems an excuse for businesses to sell stuff, and younger generations have got sucked into it.

That being said, I hope you have had a good Valentine's day, anyway!

When we were in Japan years ago, it was over Valentine's Day and I was surprised to be given chocolate by several of the men we knew and were seeing (or staying with). Then I learned about the two giving holidays! I love your heart!

I kind of like the way the Japanese celebrate Valentine's - of course I have to approve with all the chocolate! Did you give any away this year?
