Square Watermelons

Have you ever seen square watermelons? This photo is from Zentsuji, Kagawa Prefecture in Japan. These watermelons are grown in transparent plastic containers, resulting in these 18 cm cubic watermelon that sell for arount 10,000 yen each. They weigh about 6 kg each. They are not edible and are used mainly as display pieces in department stores and fruit shops. Maybe this is only in Japan.

My first reaction was how do younget square watermelons? Now I know 😄 shame they can't be eaten seems a waste, although they would look amazing in a shop display.
It definitely seems like something "only in Japan"!
I remember reading about these some years back, so it is interesting to see that they are still a thing. I thought it was a fad that would disappear quite quickly. It is difficult to understand the ongoing attraction of a very expensive inedible watermelon!
Yes, I bet it is 'only in Japan'.
Why can't they be eaten?
Hha! I remember something years ago about square tomatoes but I dont think it caught on. xx
I was kind of excited about these until I read 'not edible'! What a waste.
New to me. And very weird!
