The Nippon Foundations Offers Financial Support to Ukrainians Who Come to Japan
I don't think Japan is known for taking in refugees. Being an island country, people can't just cross over the border from another country. But, as the humanitarian crises in Ukraine worsens, Japan wants to help.
I was very happy to read that the Nippon Foundation will provide 5 billion yen in support to Ukrainians wanting to come to Japan. This money will be spent for transportation and subsidies for three years living expenses. The Foundation wants to make initial payments for 500,000 yen per household for furniture and other immediate expenses, then an annual support of a million yen per person for three years. The Japanese government will be simplifying entrance procedures and residence requirements, and local governments will provide public housing and daily goods allowances.
The Foundation states that there are currently approximately 900 displaced Ukrainians who want to come to Japan, in addition to 150 already in the country. I hope that they will all be happy here.

I agree Japan is not known for accepting refugees. Instead Japan has a good reputation for helping 'at the source', often sending medical or technical staff to a place of disaster, as well as giving generous financial support.
Accepting refugees is not an easy issue, neither for the people in distress, nor for those who offer relief and shelter. Coming to Japan from Europe will involves many changes and will be a real culture shock. Japanese is not an easy language, English is not widely used, the food will be challenge, as will the climate. Then there is schooling and religion...
If the people who arrive have family members already in Japan (e.g. exchange students), and if Ukrainian people can be accepted in small groups so they are not placed all all alone in a remote village, it will be so much easier for everyone.
As you can see from the photograph, they will receive a warm welcome.
Greetings Pamela: It is heartwarming to hear this news, it breaks my heart to see Russia invade Ukraine, I hope the refugees going to Japan have a pleasant trip and adjust to living in Japan.

As you say,Japan is not a country that is willing to accept refugees.
That is why I would like to applaud the actions of Japan and support groups this time.
I think there are many difference from your own country and it is difficult.
But Japan is a country with a spirit of each other.
I want to support each other and live together.🇺🇦🇯🇵

I've read about a couple of occasions where Japan (or specific Japanese people) wanted to help out with Ukraine. It doesn't feel like the most obvious of connections, but it's heartwarming!
