Japan Is In the Top Ten Most Peaceful Places

The 14th edition of the Global Peace Index is out and Japan ranks number nine overall and number three in the Asia Pacific region.  This is no surprise to me. Iceland is again ranked number one, followed by New Zealand, Portugal, and Austria.

The Global Peace Index ranks 163 countries and approximately 99.7% of the world's population in three areas: societal safety and security, ongoing domestic and international conflict, and militarisation.  This year, coronavirus and each country's response to the pandemic were added to the criteria.

Where does your country fall? Do you think it is an accurate ranking?

Sweden is higher on the list than I would have thought, (as there have been many shootings and explosions recently), and Bhutan not as high. Japan's position is not surprising.

I'm glad to see Australia in the top section. It feels pretty peaceful here. I'd probably be happy to live in any of those top countries, but the climate here suits me better than several of the others!

Policies for the latter half year would change the ranking.

I'm not surprised. Everywhere I've traveled in Japan has been beautiful.

The USA is 121? I felt sure it would have a lower rating. I'm glad you live in a peaceful place.
