Nomura Samurai House and Gardens in Kanazawa
The Nomura Samurai House is a very interesting place with some gorgeous garden areas and historical exhibits. If you are in Kanazawa and interested in Japanese history, this is a good place to visit. The entry fee is 550 yen for adults.
The house belonged to the wealthy Normura family who served the ruling Maeda family from the 16th century until the end of the Edo period in the mid 19th century. After that the old social class system ended and this house fell into ruin. In the early 20th century, wealthy businessman Kubo Hikobei bought the property and refurbished it and added a tea room. The house is now owned by the city of Kanazawa and restored to show the home life of samurai.
Although relatively small, this lush green garden was listed in 2003 by the Journal of Japanese Gardening as one of the three top gardens in Japan. Many of the rooms of the house are arranged so that this garden can be viewed from different angles.
